A

Accutane® - a brand of Isotretinoin. Isotretinoin is an alternative to oral antibiotics that is sometimes effective for severe outbreaks of acne pustulesand rosacea papules. However it is not recommended as the side effects are most severe.

Achromycin V® - an oral antibiotic often prescribed for rosacea. Also sold under the brand name(s): Panmycin®, Tetracyn®, Robitet®, Tetracycline, Sumycin®

Aclometasone dipropionate – Anti-infective, topical, cream and ointment are low to medium potency corticosteroids for treatment of arthritis, atopic dermatitis. Also sold under the brand name: Aclovate.

Acne - An inflammatory skin condition characterized by superficial skin eruptions around hair follicles.

Acne-Ltd III™ - designed specifically for skin that is sensitive or inflamed due to rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis and acne. Manufactured by Bass and Boney Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Acne Rosacea – chronic acne form co-existing with rosacea.

Acne Vulgaris - An inflammatory skin condition characterized by superficial skin eruptions around hair follicles. Acne vulgaris is the most common type of acne.

Alternative names acne; cystic acne; pimples

Acute - sudden or severe. An acute condition is one in which symptoms appear, change, or worsen rapidly. The opposite of chronic.

Adapalene - is a topical retinoid analogue indicated for the treatment of acne vulgaris. Also sold under the brand name: Differin®

Afirm™ - brand name for a retinol product

AHA – abbreviation for alpha hydroxyl acid which is a simple organic fruit acid found in nature or synthesized in the laboratory

Azelaic Acid – (heptanedicarboxylic acid) is used for the treatment of mild to moderate acne. Sold under the brand name, Finevin. Also called Azelex Acid.

BenzaClin® - a topical treatment produced by Dermik ; it’s a combination of two acne medications in a single gel: clindamycin 1% and benzoyl peroxide 5%.

Benzamycin® - (3% erythromycin, 5% benzoyl peroxide), topical combination of benzoyl peroxide and erythromycin. Manufactured by Dermik.

Benzoyl peroxide - another product with antibacterial properties commonly used to treat acne. Sold under a large variety of names.

Beta Hydroxy Acid – or BHA is a simple organic fruit acid found in nature or synthesized in the laboratory

Betaplex - a combination of alpha and beta hydroxy acids in a cream

Blackheads - Blackheads are small, dark spots (about the size of a pinhead) caused by discoloration of the surface of a small plug in the opening of a follicle (pore).

Blepharitis - An inflammation of the lash follicles at the eyelid margins due to excess growth in lash follicles of bacteria normally present on the skin.

Bulbous Nose - A large, bulbous, ruddy appearance of the nose.

Chemical Peels - a solution applied to the skin to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the production of new skin cells.

Chronic - A condition that is continuous or persistent over an extended period of time. The opposite of acute. A chronic condition is one that is long-standing, not easily or quickly resolved.

Cloderm® - by Penederm, (clocortolone pivalate), a mid-potency corticosteroid cream for the treatment of inflammation and itching effective in treating stasis dermatitis, eczema/atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis and seborrhea

Clovate® - by Glaxo Wellcome, (Clobetasol Propionate.0,05%) high potency corticosteroid for the relief of the inflammation and itching

Colloidal silver - a suspension of submicroscopic metallic silver particles in a colloidal base. Long-term use of silver preparations can lead to argyria, a condition in which silver salts deposit in the skin, eyes, and internal organs, and the skin turns ashen-gray.

Comedogenic - (pronounced coh-me-dough-jen-ic) refers to anything that tends to clog pores and produce comedones, commonly called blackheads.

Comedones - Comedones are small, flesh colored, white, or dark bumps that give skin a rough texture. The bumps are found at the opening of a sebaceous follicle (pore). Whiteheads and /or blackheads. Frequently found on the forehead and chin of those with acne.

Conjunctivitis - Inflammation or infection of the membrane lining the eyelids. Also known as pink eye.

Contact dermatitis - A skin inflammation caused by direct contact with a substance.

Demodex folliculorum - A cigar shaped mite which lives in the skin. It has been suggested in the past that this mite may be the cause of rosacea but studies have not supported this.

Fluticasone - a corticosteroid used to reduce itching, redness, and swelling associated with many skin conditions available as a cream or ointment. Also sold under the brand name(s): Cutivate®.

Flushing - Reddening of the face similar to blushing. Occurs when a larger amount of blood flows through vessels quickly and the vessels expand under the skin to handle the flow

FS Shampoo - (fluocinolone), a topical steroid. Also sold under the brand name(s): Derma-Smoothe/FS, Fluonid, Flurosyn, Synalar, Synalar-HP, Synemol

Glycolic Acid – is a Fruit acid containing natural chemicals and is also known as alpha hydroxy acids (AHA). They occur naturally from certain fruits such as grapes, citrus and apples, which are then modified in a laboratory.

Halcinonide - high potency corticosteroid. Also sold under the brand name(s): Halog®, Halog®E.

Helicobacter pylori - A stomach bacteria which causes ulcers that was once thought to be the cause of rosacea. Later studies did not prove this connection.

Iridocyclitis - Eye inflammation.

Iritis - Inflammation of the iris, a part of the eye. Symptoms include eye pain, sensitivity to light, and/or blurry vision.

Isopto-Cetamide® - Ophthalmic antibiotic used to treat eye infections. Also sold under the brand name(s): Sulfair®, Ak-Sulf®, Ophthacet®, Cetamide®, Sulfair Forte®, Sodium Sulamyd®, Sulten-10®, sulfacetamide.

Keratitis - A non-penetrating erosion, or open sore in the outer layer of the cornea, the center portion of the eye that surrounds the pupil. Alternative names Bacterial keratitis; Fungal keratitis; Acanthamoeba keratitis; Herpes simplex keretitis , Corneal ulcers and infections

Ketoconazole - an antifungal preparation. It is used to treat sebborrheic dermatitis with the rationale that sebborrheic dermatitis is caused by a fungus which lives on everyone's skin and is normally non-pathological. It is the main ingredient in Nizoral.

Kinerase® - a moisturizing cream containing N6-furfuryladenine (für-für-el-ad-e-nen).

Klaron® - Sodium Sulfacetamide (sull-fuh-SEET-uh-mide) Lotion. Topical antibiotic used to treat acne.

Lotrisone® - by Schering, (Clotrimazole, Betamethasone dipropionate),cream and lotion contain a combination of a steroid (betamethasone) and an antifungal drug (clotrimazole). It is used to treat skin infections caused by fungus, such as athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm of the body.
